Only a Sith Deals in Absolutes?

Star Wars, one of the most celebrated movie sagas of all-time, which gave us one of the greatest plot twists—”I am your father”—followed by one of the dumbest—”Leia is my sister.” And to prove this epic fail was no fluke, creator George Lucas came up with the prequel films, in which we get this stupid line: “Only a Sith deals in absolutes.”

Which would be an absolute. Hey, even Harrison Ford said, “George, you can type this [Bantha fodder], but you sure can’t say it.”

To say “There are no absolutes” is a self-defeating statement. Therefore, there must be absolutes. And you know this. No one actually believes things like “there’s no such thing as truth” or “truth is different for everyone” because you’d have to rely on objective truth in order for those statements to be true. Therefore, there is such thing as truth, and that truth is the same for everyone.

The Bible says that the unrighteous suppress the truth with unrighteousness. They’re ungrateful to God, so “they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools,” and believe foolish philosophies like, “There are no absolutes.”

The Bible instructs us to “avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called ‘knowledge,’ for by professing it some have swerved from the faith,” the truth that all have sinned against God, but we are forgiven by faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Jesus upholds the universe by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). And it’s by His word, we have peace, absolutely, when we understand the text.
